BTS, an acronym of Bangtan Sonyeondan or “Beyond the Scene,” is a Grammy-nominated South Korean group that has been capturing the hearts of millions of fans globally since its debut in June 2013.

Gaining recognition for their authentic and self-produced music, top-notch performances, and the way they interact with their fans, BTS has established themselves as “21st century Pop Icons” breaking countless world records. While imparting a positive influence through activities such as the LOVE MYSELF campaign and the UN ‘Speak Yourself’ speech, the band has mobilized millions of fans across the world (named ARMY), collected four No. 1 songs in a span of 9 months, performed multiple sold-out stadium shows across the world, and been named TIME’s Entertainer of the Year 2020.

1. Greetings (인사법)

 

(둘, 셋) 방! 탄! 안녕하세요, 방탄소년단입니다. / (two, three) room! burnt! Hello, this is BTS.

한국에서의 팀 인사법이며, "둘 셋 방!"까지 리더 RM이 선창하고 "탄!"을 외칠때 손으로 총 모양을 만들며 다 같이 외치는 방식으로 인사한다.

This is the team greeting method in Korea, and when the leader RM sings “Two, three!” and shouts “Tan!”, he makes a gun shape with his hands and shouts together.

• 2013년 6월 13일 싱글 앨범 《2 COOL 4 SKOOL》로 데뷔하여 그 해 가장 주목 받는 신인으로 부상하여 신인상을 받았으며, 2014년 상남자가 인기를 끌어 첫 음악방송 1위 후보에도 올랐었고 처음 참여했던 LA KCON 무대에서도 환호를 받아 미국에서 좋은 반응을 얻는 기초가 됐다.

4. Group Name (팀명)

 

• 방탄소년단(防彈少年團)이란 이름에서 방탄은 ‘총알을 막아낸다’라는 뜻이고, "10대들이 살아가면서 겪는 힘든 일, 편견과 억압을 우리가 막아내겠다는 심오한 의미를 가진다. 이어 '현실에 안주하지 않고 꿈을 향해 끊임없이 성장하는 청춘'이라는 'Beyond The Scene'의 의미를 더했다.

• In the name BTS (防彈少年團), BTS means 'blocks bullets', and "it has a profound meaning that we will block the hardships, prejudice, and oppression that teenagers face in their lives.
   Next, I added the meaning of 'Beyond The Scene', which is 'Youth who is constantly growing towards their dreams without being complacent with reality.

5. Identity (정체성)

 

• 방탄소년단은 본래 힙합 음악을 컨셉으로 꾸려졌던 그룹이다. 결성 초기에는 RM을 중심으로 힙합 그룹으로 데뷔하려 했으며, 안무보다는 노래와 랩에 집중하는 콘셉트를 가지고 있었다고 한다.

• BTS is a group originally organized with the concept of hip-hop music. In the early days of their formation, they tried to debut as a hip-hop group centered on RM, and they said they had a concept of focusing on singing and rapping rather than choreography.

 

• 이미 래퍼로서의 경력이 있던 래퍼라인의 실력이 상당히 좋다고 평가되기도 하고, 곡 전반적으로도 랩의 비중이 상당히 높다. 그리고 대부분의 멤버가 작사·작곡 능력을 갖추고 있어 싱어송라이터로서의 면모를 보인다.

• 전반적으로 10대와 20대 청춘들의 생각과 고민, 삶과 사랑, 꿈과 역경을 주요 주제로 하는 노래들을 통해 자신들만의 세계관을 구축하고 있으며, 연계되는 이야기를 다양한 뮤직비디오들을 통해 유기적으로 풀어 나가는 모습을 보여준다.

• 방탄소년단의 첫 대상을 받게 하고 본격적으로 세계에 알리게 해준 정규 2집 앨범 "WINGS"로 넘어가면서는 성장한 음악성과 더불어 청춘이 성장하면서 겪는 고통과 유혹 그리고 성숙에 관해서 이야기한다. 때때로 노래 가사에서 특정 지명이나 상표를 직접 언급하는 때도 있어 지상파 방송 불가 판정을 받기도 하지만 일부 앨범 수록곡에 해당하는 사항이다.

• 'MAP OF THE SOUL 시리즈'는 "MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA" 앨범에서 팬들에 대한 사랑을, "MAP OF THE SOUL : 7" 앨범에서는 데뷔 8년차(만 7년)가 된 방탄소년단이 자신을 돌아보는 이야기가 진행되고 있다.

8. Little Information (소소한 정보)

 

• 영어를 자연스럽게 구사할 수 있는 멤버는 RM이 유일하며, 외국인 멤버 역시 존재하지 않는다.

• RM is the only member who can speak English naturally, and there are no foreign members.

 

•  RM이 가장 먼저 빅히트에 입사했고 이후 슈가, 제이홉이 초기 멤버로 합류했다. 이 3명은 현재 방탄소년단의 래퍼라인으로 활동 중이다. 다만 제이홉은 본래 래퍼가 아니라 보컬 + 댄서를 지망했다가 래퍼 연습생들이 대거 탈퇴하자 기존의 희망 포지션을 변경하여 래퍼라인에 합류한 것이라고 한다. 제이홉은 노력 끝에 현재는 방탄소년단 래퍼라인의 한 축을 담당하는 중. 

• RM joined Big Hit first, followed by Suga and J-Hope as early members. These three are currently active in BTS' rapper line.
